What: 92YTribeca presents their favorite of Guy Maddin’s films, including several short films, all in amazing 35mm prints.
Maddin has made more than eight feature films in Winnipeg, all enclosed in elaborately designed sets. Filming in mostly black and whites, Maddin is a fan of the Vaseline smudged lens, encasing his characters in the snow-globe of his making. The imagery defies its modern production date, creating strange timeless places. Characters look and speak like classic Hollywood stars, but are made up of strange quirks like psychic tapeworms or eyes blinded separately by a mother’s pin and a cuckoo clock. With the darkness of German Expressionism, but the wonder of a fairy tale, Maddin nears absurdity. Too humorous to be melodramas, but too somber to be comedies, they inhabit some other place that is familiar the way dreams can be.
