Summer is a great time in New York for film lovers–there are free movie screenings almost every weekday! Here’s the rundown:
On Mondays, check out the famed HBO Bryant Part Summer Movie Festival. Films showing this summer include Harold and Maude (July 20), Kramer vs. Kramer (August 3), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (August 17). The festival runs every Monday this summer from June 15 to August 17. You can get seats starting at five pm–and you should show up at five, the park fills up super-fast.
(no weekly series Tuesday)
On Wednesdays, you can take your pick of several weekly series: The Outdoor Cinema Program at Socrates Sculpture Park, Summer on the Hudson: Movie Series Under the Stars, AND River Flicks at Pier 54.
At The Outdoor Cinema Program at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, chief curator of the Museum of the Moving Image David Schwartz shows movies from all over the globe. Films this year come from Thailand, France, the US, Israel, Kazakhstan, and Italy. This series runs from July 15 to August 19. Make sure to check out the critically-acclaimed Waltz with Bashir on August 5.
This summer the theme of River Flicks is I Know What You Did Last Summer, featuring hit films from the summer of 2008. There are actual seats available, and FREE POPCORN to boot. Wednesday Films for Adults will run at Pier 54 (14th Street) from July 8 to August 16. You can check out Iron Man (July 8), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (July 15), The Dark Knight (July 22), Tropic Thunder (August 5), and stoner fave Pineapple Express (August 16), plus a couple more successes from the summer past.
On Thursdays you can attend The Brooklyn Bridge Movies With a View, now in its 10th year. From July 9 to August 27 you can enjoy movies chosen for the theme Stolen Summer: Thrillers, Capers, and Heists. Movies include The Maltese Falcon (July 16), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (August 13), and cult classic Edward Scissorhands (August 27).
River Flicks screens a second time each week on Fridays. This time around the theme is Films for Kids, but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy them! Held at Pier 46 at Charles Street (not 54–only Adult Films at Pier 54), River Flicks for Kids will run from July 10 to August 24 and show some cross-generational childhood favorites, including The Wizard of Oz (July 10), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (July 31), The Muppet Movie (August 7), and the Columbia University staple Ghost Busters (July 24)!! As with the films for grown-ups, there is seating and FREE POPCORN.
***IN GENERAL, SCREENINGS START AT SUNDOWN. But showing up early is encouraged for each and every free show. Enjoy!
